Getting wind/BESS hybrid sizing right
Presentation summary
Getting sizing right for wind/BESS hybrids is critical for optimising project revenue and returns. However, wind/BESS hybrids are significantly more complex than solar/BESS hybrids. Depending on the individual wind profile at the site, there can be many intervals where the wind farm and BESS will compete for dispatch and hence result in revenue cannibalisation. This presentation will cover key choices in project configuration including AC vs DC coupling, size of wind farm (MW), battery technology, power sizing of BESS (MW), storage capacity sizing (MWh) and export limit at the connection point. The presentation will also show results from Energy Synapse modelling using an example wind farm, of how the above configuration factors shape revenue outcomes in wholesale energy and FCAS markets.
