Presentation title
Capturing the value of volatility in illiquid electricity financial markets
Presentation summary
Electricity market volatility is increasing as weather driven events continue to impact supply and demand. This volatility is compounded by the reduced reliability of Australia’s ageing coal fired power generation fleet, which is also flowing through to reduced liquidity in financial markets, with ASX Energy trading volumes down 20% since in 2024 compared to 2022.
Financial markets have been slow to respond. Consequently, there is a growing mismatch between the pace of the physical energy transition and the availability of financial products to manage risks. This risk is now recognised by the Nelson NEM wholesale market settings review. However, it presents a significant opportunity to active managers of diversified renewable energy portfolios, as well as solar plus BESS operators.
Based on early analysis of trades in the ASX Energy’s new Morning and Evening Peak Electricity Futures Contracts scheduled to start trading on 30th June in NSW, followed by other states during July (QLD on 7th July), is this the first bold step in accelerating the supply of more appropriate risk management products? Does it provide a pathway to market for active renewable portfolio managers or provide access to more appropriate tools to manage portfolio risks when offering shaped and semi-shaped products to the market?
